What if walls could talk? What stories would they whisper about the China Banking Corporation? Here, at the corner of Paseo de Roxas and Villar Street, stands the modern Chinabank building. But the true heart of Chinabank’s story lies within the walls of its original headquarters, a restored landmark in Binondo. China Banking Corporation, affectionately known as Chinabank, began its journey in 1920. Founded by a group of visionary businessmen, including Dee C. Chuan and Albino SyCip, Chinabank aimed to meet the unique financial needs of the Chinese Filipino business community. Their first modest office was located on Rosario Street, now known as Quintin Paredes Street. Chinabank understood the value of “xìnyòng,” trust, which was crucial for business in the Chinese Filipino community. They extended credit based on trust, not just collateral, a practice that resonated deeply with their clients. The bank quickly flourished, and by 1924, their impressive headquarters in Binondo was complete. In a remarkable feat, Chinabank became one of the first companies listed on the Manila Stock Exchange in 1927. Chinabank even extended its reach to China, opening branches in Amoy in 1925 and Shanghai in 1929. While those branches closed due to political unrest, Chinabank’s legacy continued. Even the Japanese occupation during World War II couldn’t extinguish Chinabank’s spirit. Though operations ceased during the war, they shrewdly transferred assets overseas for safekeeping, facilitating a swift reopening in 1945. Chinabank played a pivotal role in the post-war reconstruction of the Philippines, supporting businesses in vital industries. It continued to innovate. In 1969, Chinabank became the first bank in Southeast Asia to computerize its operations and proudly opened its new 15-story headquarters in Makati. It’s remarkable to think of how Chinabank continued to adapt and grow, introducing the first telephone banking service in the Philippines in 1988 and co-founding BancNet, the nation’s largest ATM network. Today, Chinabank stands as a testament to vision, resilience, and a century of serving the Filipino people. As you stand here, consider the legacy of China Banking Corporation. From a small office in Binondo to a modern financial institution, its story is interwoven with the economic and cultural fabric of the Philippines.
