Hidden among the folds of Álvaro Obregón lies Chimalistac a neighborhood whispered to be a place of white shields. It’s a secret tucked away from typical tourist maps. Chimalistac was once a village. Its Nahuatl name means “place of the white shield”. Before that the land belonged to a Carmelite monastery. The monks cultivated extensive orchards and gardens. They created a sophisticated irrigation system. This system channeled the Magdalena River. The water nourished their sprawling orchards. The waterworks were located in a building. This building now houses a cultural center. The Carmelites built bridges to manage the water flow. These bridges still stand. They are a testament to the ingenuity of the monks.

Today Chimalistac is a residential neighborhood. It is full of cobblestone streets and colonial churches. It has an undeniable charm. Its leafy tranquility is surprising for a neighborhood so close to the bustling city. You can easily see the bridges the friars built. They used lava rocks. These bridges crossed what was once the Magdalena River. Now the river is just a path.

Chimalistac’s history is rich. It goes back to pre-Hispanic times. Then it was called Temalistac. That name means “the place where sacrificial stones are made”. Legend says the Aztec sun stone originated there. Later in the 16th century members of Hernán Cortés’ army settled in Chimalistac. Juan de Guzmán Ixtolinque received the land. His grandson later donated it to the Carmelites. They began building their complex in 1615. Construction continued through the 17th century. The Carmelites abandoned the property after the Reforma laws of 1857.

In 2012 the city declared Chimalistac part of its heritage. Residents welcome visitors. They are happy to share the neighborhood’s deep history. Wander the streets and soak in the ambiance.
