The Children’s Theatre Company is a magical place. You are standing right in front of it. It was founded in 1961 as The Moppet Players. Back then, they didn’t have a building to call their own, so the actors performed in a restaurant. It wasn’t until 1965 that the group moved into the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and became Children’s Theatre Company. They are so popular, that they have two performance spaces – the UnitedHealth Group Stage and the Cargill Stage. The UnitedHealth Group Stage can hold up to 747 people. It’s amazing how many families, young and old, go to that theatre to enjoy the brilliant productions at Children’s Theatre Company. This theatre company has received much acclaim, including a Tony Award in 2003 for Outstanding Regional Theatre. The November 2, 2004, edition of Time magazine named the company as the top theater for children in the U.S. The Children’s Theatre Company also has a program called “Plays for New Audiences.” It began in 2004 to provide scripts to professional and amateur theatres, churches, libraries, and schools. That’s why the Children’s Theatre Company is so important to the city of Minneapolis. They’ve been entertaining families for over 50 years.
