CHIJ St Joseph’s Convent

From a rented house on Flower Road bloomed CHIJ St. Joseph’s Convent. It was 1938. A mere 21 pupils, one Holy Infant Jesus nun, and two teachers began a legacy. CHIJ St. Joseph’s Convent, initially known as Paya Lebar Convent, embarked on its journey. World War II disrupted life, but not the school’s spirit. In 1945, CHIJ St. Joseph’s Convent reopened in a borrowed bungalow, its numbers swelling to 214 students. The school found a new home on Hillside Drive in the 1950s. It blossomed, adding new buildings and facilities. In 1965, netball took root, becoming a cherished tradition. The sport propelled CHIJ St. Joseph’s Convent students to excel at national competitions. After Singapore’s independence, the primary section was phased out, transforming CHIJ St. Joseph’s Convent into a dedicated secondary school in 1974. Two new schools, CHIJ Our Lady of the Nativity and CHIJ Our Lady of Good Counsel, emerged from its primary section. The year 1978 saw three CHIJ St. Joseph’s Convent students achieve national recognition for their outstanding O-Level results. The school continued to thrive. Renovations and the introduction of a computer room in 1990 marked its growth. A new chapter began in 2000. CHIJ St. Joseph’s Convent relocated to its current location at Sengkang East Way, beside St. Anne’s Church. That same year, a student earned the title of top National student in the N-Level examination. The school’s success continued, ranking among the top 10 value-added schools in 2002. Beyond academics, CHIJ St. Joseph’s Convent received Sustained Achievement Awards for its uniformed group and performing arts in 2007. A fundraising walkathon in 2011, from the old Hillside Drive campus to the new Sengkang East Way location, marked the opening of the Indoor Sports Hall, connecting past and present. CHIJ St. Joseph’s Convent has garnered further accolades, including three Best Practice Awards in 2014 and the Lee Hsien Loong Award for Innovations in 2015. From humble beginnings in a rented house to a modern campus, CHIJ St. Joseph’s Convent continues to nurture young women, fostering virtue and steadfastness.
