Is it a church or a love letter in stone? This, my friends, is the Chiesa di Sant’Anna al Trivio. An often-overlooked gem in the heart of Naples. Don’t let its unassuming exterior fool you. This church holds a story as unique as its nickname, “al Trivio.” Now, you might think “trivio” refers to a crossroads, and you wouldn’t be entirely wrong. You see, the name actually pokes fun at a French military man, Odet de Foix, who earned the less than flattering nickname “del Trecco.” Imagine the audacity of this Frenchman, daring to lay siege to Naples in 1528! The Chiesa di Sant’Anna al Trivio, built centuries later, adopted this nickname as a badge of honor, a testament to the city’s resilience. Step inside, and you’ll discover a masterpiece of Neoclassical architecture. The architect, Filippo Botta, poured his heart and soul into this, his final project. Sadly, Botta was a staunch supporter of the Bourbon dynasty and couldn’t bear to see Naples become part of a unified Italy. Perhaps that’s why he poured so much of himself into this church, a final love letter to his beloved city. Look around, notice the central plan, the way the space seems to flow. See how the dome crowns the apse, bathing the interior in a soft light. It’s said that Botta even reused a 16th-century sarcophagus for his beloved wife, Fortunata Vecchione, placing her sculpted portrait atop it. The Chiesa di Sant’Anna al Trivio, a blend of history, humor, and heartache. A testament to enduring love, for both a city and a soul mate.
