A church with two names? Right here in front of us is the Chiesa di San Diego all’Ospedaletto. It’s also known as San Giuseppe Maggiore. This grand church, tucked away on Via Medina, has quite a history to tell. The Chiesa di San Diego all’Ospedaletto was originally called San Gioacchino. A noblewoman named Giovanna Castriota commissioned its construction in 1514. Imagine the city buzzing around as this house of worship rose from the ground. Over time, it evolved into a hospital for impoverished gentlemen, offering refuge within its hallowed walls. The Franciscan Order of Friars Minor took over in the late 16th century, rebuilding the church and dedicating it to San Diego de Alcalá in 1595. This marked the birth of the Chiesa di San Diego all’Ospedaletto as we know it. Step inside, and you’ll find yourself in a world of artistic grandeur. Sadly, an earthquake in 1784 took its toll, destroying many of the original frescoes. Yet, some treasures survived. Look up and admire the surviving frescoes by Battistello Caracciolo. Don’t miss Massimo Stanzione’s powerful depiction of the “Transit of St. Joseph,” a testament to the church’s artistic heritage. The Chiesa di San Diego all’Ospedaletto stands as a testament to Naples’ rich history and enduring spirit. It’s a place where art and faith intertwine, leaving a lasting impression on all who cross its threshold.
