Why is the Chiesa della Santissima Trinità dei Pellegrini designed with two octagons? We are standing in front of an architectural marvel. The Chiesa della Santissima Trinità dei Pellegrini is not your typical church. It was founded in the 16th century by a Knight of Jerusalem. Fabrizio Pignatelli di Monteleone wanted to create a place of worship and healing. The church you see before you with its unusual design dates back to a renovation in 1769. It was at this time that the church’s unique layout was created. Two octagons connected by a rectangle give the Chiesa della Santissima Trinità dei Pellegrini its distinctive shape. The first octagon serves as the nave. The second one functions as an oratory. The rectangle in between joins the two and forms the presbytery. Inside the Chiesa della Santissima Trinità dei Pellegrini, you will find stunning stucco works. These works by Angelo Viva depict religious figures such as San Filippo Neri and San Gennaro. Look closely, and you’ll also spot paintings by notable artists. Paolo De Matteis and the school of Giuseppe Bonito left their mark on this sacred space.
