Fast forward to 2017. The Chief Post Office closed for four years. A complex engineering feat began. The goal? To build City Rail Link tunnels beneath it. Original support columns blocked the way. The building’s weight had to be transferred. Temporary foundations were constructed. This protected the Category A-listed heritage building.

Imagine the challenge. Workers excavated reclaimed land below sea level. The Waitematā Harbour was just across the road. The weight of 14,000 tonnes of masonry pressed down. Engineers installed 340 tonnes of steel beams. These spanned new piles on either side of the tunnels. The Chief Post Office’s weight shifted. Permanent reinforced concrete foundations rose beneath it.

The Chief Post Office reopened on April 6, 2021. Elders from Tāmaki Makaurau Iwi led a morning blessing. The interior was meticulously restored. Distinctive curved skylights and original building materials shine again. Building columns old and new are a feature. Clay and glass artifacts were unearthed. Remains of the first Queen Street Wharf will be part of Britomart Station.

The opening of Te Komititanga in front of the Chief Post Office is a sign of the times. It provides safer access to Britomart station. It offers more space for people.
