Remember the Chicago Rat Hole. This unlikely tourist attraction captured hearts and imaginations. The Chicago Rat Hole was located on West Roscoe Street. It was in Chicago’s Roscoe Village neighborhood.

What exactly was the Chicago Rat Hole? It was a rodent-shaped impression in a sidewalk slab. The impression included claws and a tail. Many saw the Rat Hole as a shrine. People left offerings. These included cheese, coins, flowers, toys and alcohol.

The Chicago Rat Hole’s fame exploded in January 2024. A comedian tweeted an image of it. Suddenly, Chicago residents and tourists flocked to see it. The image went viral. People made a pilgrimage to the Chicago Rat Hole.

Even Illinois State Representative Ann Williams promoted it. She called it the jewel of her district. The Lakeview Roscoe Village Chamber of Commerce even took name suggestions. Splatatouille was the winning name.

But the Chicago Rat Hole’s story has a twist. Some neighbors weren’t thrilled. The crowds and offerings became a nuisance. There was concern that food would attract real rats.

Adding to the drama someone filled the hole with plaster. Locals quickly restored it. A marriage ceremony even took place there.

Debate arose about the Rat Hole’s origins. Was it really a rat? Or was it a squirrel? One expert thought a squirrel fell onto the wet concrete. An oak tree once stood above the spot.

Sadly, the Chicago Department of Transportation removed the slab in April 2024. They determined it was damaged. But don’t despair. The city preserved the slab. It is in storage. City officials will decide what to do with it. Perhaps it will be installed in a local park.

The Chicago Rat Hole brought people together. It provided a silly distraction. It was a unique Chicago thing. Even though it is gone it is not forgotten. It remains encased at City Hall. It will stay there until the city finds a proper place to store and display it.

Remember Briana Carroll? She grew up in Roscoe Village. She remembers trying not to get her Razor scooter caught in it.

So next time you see an oddity in the sidewalk think of the Chicago Rat Hole. Think of its story. Think of the joy it brought to so many. It shows that even the smallest thing can become something special.
