The Metallurgical Laboratory at the University of Chicago became a hub of scientific innovation. Under the leadership of Enrico Fermi, a team of brilliant physicists worked tirelessly. They aimed to achieve a self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction. This was a crucial step toward creating the atomic bomb.
The team assembled Chicago Pile-1 or CP-1 in a makeshift laboratory beneath the Stagg Field stadium. Imagine a squash court transformed into a clandestine construction site. High-school dropouts from the back of the Chicago stockyards worked alongside renowned scientists. They meticulously stacked graphite bricks and uranium.
