Dive into the past where a world-altering experiment unfolded right beneath our feet. We are standing at the Chicago Pile-1 Site A. This location marks a pivotal moment in human history. Here at Chicago Pile-1 Site A, the secrets of the atom were unlocked and the course of the 20th century was changed forever.

Let’s journey back to the early 1940s. The world was consumed by war. The fear loomed large that Nazi Germany was developing devastating new weapons. The United States launched the Manhattan Project. Its goal was to harness the power of the atom before its enemies could.

The Metallurgical Laboratory at the University of Chicago became a hub of scientific innovation. Under the leadership of Enrico Fermi, a team of brilliant physicists worked tirelessly. They aimed to achieve a self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction. This was a crucial step toward creating the atomic bomb.

The team assembled Chicago Pile-1 or CP-1 in a makeshift laboratory beneath the Stagg Field stadium. Imagine a squash court transformed into a clandestine construction site. High-school dropouts from the back of the Chicago stockyards worked alongside renowned scientists. They meticulously stacked graphite bricks and uranium.

On December 2, 1942, the team was ready. Fermi directed the experiment from a balcony overlooking the pile. As control rods were carefully withdrawn the world held its breath. The instruments flickered to life. A sustained nuclear chain reaction was achieved.

Chicago Pile-1 was a crude pile of black bricks and wooden timbers. It contained 45000 ultra-pure graphite blocks weighing 360 short tons. The reactor was fueled by 5.4 short tons of uranium metal and 45 short tons of uranium oxide. This marked the dawn of the atomic age. The success of Chicago Pile-1 demonstrated the feasibility of harnessing nuclear energy. It paved the way for the development of nuclear weapons.

After the successful experiment, Chicago Pile-1 could not run for very long because of its location on a busy university campus. More extensive tests would require larger and more secure facilities. Therefore, Chicago Pile-1 was dismantled in March 1943. The graphite and uranium metal were used in Chicago Pile-2 built at Argonne.

The original site of Chicago Pile-1 at Stagg Field is now a memorial quadrangle. A sculpture titled Nuclear Energy commemorates the historic event that took place here. The sculpture was unveiled on December 2 1967 exactly a quarter-century after the first controlled self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction.

The Chicago Pile-1 Site A stands as a testament to human ingenuity. It also serves as a reminder of the profound responsibility that comes with scientific discovery. As we leave this site, let us reflect on the legacy of Chicago Pile-1. May it inspire us to use knowledge for the betterment of humanity.
