They found encouragement in the late Metropolitan Dr. Alexander Mar Thoma. He visited in 1973 and urged them to formalize their gatherings. By 1977, the group had registered as a non-profit in Illinois and even received their first assigned pastor. The Chicago Mar Thoma congregation was officially recognized by the Mar Thoma Synod the following year. As the congregation grew, so did their dream of a dedicated space. Their wish was realized in 1983 with the purchase of land on Potter Road. The foundation stone was laid in 1985, and by November 1986, the Chicago Mar Thoma Church stood ready. Today, the Chicago Mar Thoma Church stands as a symbol of how from humble beginnings, a vibrant community can blossom. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
