Over 75 houses stand on stilts. They stretch out over the water. Welcome to Chew Jetty. This isn’t just any jetty. Chew Jetty is one of Penang’s Clan Jetties. It’s a unique waterfront village. The Chew family built it in the mid-nineteenth century.

Chew Jetty is special. It’s the oldest and largest of the remaining Clan Jetties. Chinese immigrants built these jetties. They needed housing near their work. Many were dockworkers and boat operators. The city boomed. It was a major port. Trade in tin and spices flourished. This attracted people from many backgrounds.

Chew Jetty grew. As the family expanded more houses were added. The jetty extended further into the sea. Today around 600 people call Chew Jetty home. It’s a vibrant community. You’ll find traditional Chinese culture and customs here. There’s even a temple at each end of the jetty. These face the sea. They bring good fortune to the residents.

Life here has changed. Modern amenities like electricity and running water arrived decades ago. This improved living conditions dramatically. However the wooden stilts need replacing every five years. Maintenance is a constant challenge. Many younger people now live in apartments on land.

Despite the changes Chew Jetty retains its charm. You can explore shops selling souvenirs. You can even stay in a house here. The jetty is a popular tourist attraction. But it has faced challenges. A fire in 2009 destroyed five houses. Thankfully nobody was injured. The UNESCO World Heritage status brings tourists. It also brings its difficulties.

Chew Jetty is more than just a place. It’s a living testament to Penang’s history. It’s a multicultural hub. It’s a place where tradition and modernity coexist. Explore the colourful artwork. Witness the celebrations. Chew Jetty offers a unique insight into life on the water. It’s a journey through time. It’s a vibrant part of Penang’s story. And it’s waiting to be discovered.
