Here, frozen in iron and crowned with gilding, are the Chester Road Gates. These gates stand as a testament to artistry and generosity. Let’s delve into the story of these magnificent gates.

The Chester Road Gates mark a formal entrance to Queen Mary’s Gardens. They stand at the western end of Chester Road. Sigismund Goetze presented these gates to the park in 1932, but they are dated 1933. Goetze was a wealthy local artist and philanthropist.

These are not the only gates Goetze donated. He also gifted the Jubilee Gates near the York Gate entry. The Jubilee Gates were for King George V’s Silver Jubilee in 1935. That gate also marked the official reopening of Queen Mary’s Gardens after they had been remodeled.

The Chester Road Gates feature a symmetrical design. A central carriage entrance has openwork box pillars. Acanthus leaf and scroll finials crown the pillars. An acanthus leaf and scroll work overthrow links them. At the center, a radiating sun shines.

Flanking the central entrance are smaller pedestrian entrances. Panels of plain cast iron bars connect these. The pedestrian entrances have similar designs, including plain cast iron gates. The wrought iron enrichment is partly gilded.

The Chester Road Gates are one of two elaborate listed gates in Regent’s Park. The other is the Jubilee Gate. Both gates showcase the royal cipher. They both reflect Goetze’s generosity to London.

The Chester Road Gates earned a Grade II listing on July 9, 1998. This recognizes their special architectural and historic interest. The gates are a reminder of the past. They also enhance the beauty of Regent’s Park today.

Next time you pass through the Chester Road Gates, take a moment. Think about the craftsmanship. Remember Sigismund Goetze’s gift to the city. These gates are more than just an entrance. They are a work of art. They are a symbol of civic pride. The Chester Road Gates welcome everyone to Queen Mary’s Gardens.
