Isn’t it amazing that a pub like the Chesham Arms can tell such a compelling story? This isn’t just any pub. It’s a Hackney institution. The Chesham Arms stands on Mehetabel Road a testament to community spirit.

Since 1866, locals have gathered within its walls. Imagine the conversations that have echoed here. Now think about the battles fought to keep it alive.

In 2012, the Chesham Arms faced a threat. A developer bought the pub. He planned to convert it into flats. The community wouldn’t let it happen.

The Save the Chesham campaign was born. For two years, they fought tirelessly. More than 300 residents submitted evidence. They highlighted the pub’s importance.

The council recognized the Chesham Arms’ value. It was named Hackney’s first Asset of Community Value in 2013. This gave the pub protection. The developer challenged this. But he failed.

The Planning Inspectorate sided with the council in October 2014. The Chesham Arms couldn’t be turned into flats. This was a huge victory.

The pub had been used as temporary office space. But that was only allowed until March 2016. An Article 4 Direction was issued. It meant the ground floor couldn’t be changed without permission. The Chesham Arms was safe.

After a nearly 1000 days closure, a new chapter began. Local publican Andy Bird signed a 15-year lease. He promised to bring the Chesham Arms back to its former glory. He wanted to recreate the traditional East End pub.

In June 2015, the Chesham Arms reopened. The community rejoiced. Six months later, CAMRA voted it the best pub in the City and East London area.

The Chesham Arms is more than just a pub. It represents community resilience. It shows what can happen when people unite. It is a symbol of Hackney’s spirit. So raise a glass to the Chesham Arms. It’s a pub saved by the people, for the people.
