Cheng Hong Siang T’ng Kew Huang Keng Combined Temple

Nestled within Singapore’s urban landscape stands the Cheng Hong Siang T’ng Kew Huang Keng Combined Temple. It’s a place where history whispers from every corner, where the past intertwines with the present. The Cheng Hong Siang T’ng Kew Huang Keng Combined Temple began its journey in the old kampong days of Lorong Tai Seng. In 1974, a group of residents, devoted followers of Patron Saint Master Song Da Fong, started a service to aid those in need. This marked the humble beginnings of Cheng Hong Siang T’ng. This group provided help to the poor, offered free medical care, and conducted funeral services, sometimes even providing free burials for the needy. The Cheng Hong Siang T’ng quickly gained popularity, earning the support of villagers and people from surrounding areas. Officially registered in 1976, Cheng Hong Siang T’ng, under Mr. Goh Kow Eng’s leadership, expanded its services. It established a free traditional Chinese medical corner, serving people of all races, and became a member of the Blue Cross Charitable Institution. The official opening of the medical services took place on April 22, 1978, graced by Mr. Tan Cheng San, then Member of Parliament, and the late Mr. Chng Tok Gun, Chairman of Blue Cross Charitable Institution. Due to government redevelopment plans in 1979, Lorong Tai Seng was slated for acquisition. Mr. Lim Hang Chung, Chairman of Cheng Hong Siang T’ng, and the late Mr. Tan Lor Yam, then Secretary, spearheaded a donation campaign. The goal was to build a new temple at 30 Arumugan Road. This new Cheng Hong Siang T’ng Kew Huang Keng Combined Temple was completed in 1990 and officially opened on February 23 by their Legal Advisor, Mr. Lee Kim Siang. In 2000, Cheng Hong Siang T’ng collaborated with several organizations, including the South West Community Development Council and the PAP Community Foundation. They established the Loving Heart Multi-Service Centre. This center offers a range of services for the elderly and needy, such as meal delivery, medical escort, home help, counseling, and family life education. To consolidate its welfare services, the Cheng Hong Welfare Service Society was established and registered in 2004, with the assistance of Mr. Alex Lee. This society received the Institute of Public Character (tax-exempt) status in October 2004, solidifying its commitment to serving the community. The Cheng Hong Siang T’ng Kew Huang Keng Combined Temple’s story is a testament to its unwavering commitment to charity, community service, and spiritual growth. It stands as a beacon of hope and support, continuing its legacy of service from its humble beginnings in Lorong Tai Seng to its present location.
