Pure gold. That’s what they call the Chemistry & Physics Building here at UT Dallas. Opened in July 2020, this 186,000-square-foot building achieved LEED Gold status. This recognizes its environmentally conscious construction.
Let’s step inside the Chemistry & Physics Building. It houses the Department of Physics and the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The building includes classrooms, offices, and teaching and research labs. It also houses some activities of the William B. Hanson Center for Space Sciences.
Dr. Matthew Goeckner, former interim head of physics, called it an “absolutely gorgeous space.” Before its construction, the physics department was scattered across eight buildings. Now, it’s all under one roof.
Notice the L-shaped design. Dr. Bruce Novak, professor of chemistry, advocated for it. He wanted students to see science in action as they walked past the ground-floor teaching labs.
The basement of the Chemistry & Physics Building is special. It was built close to bedrock. This enhances physics research. Experiments needing minimal vibrations are performed here. Also experiments requiring the lowest temperature or a dark environment for laser spectroscopy can take place.
Consider the building’s sustainable features. Regionally sourced materials were used in its construction. Technology significantly reduces water consumption. Energy-efficient equipment and lighting reduce energy use. About 75% of demolition and construction waste was recycled. Nearly a quarter of the building materials were made of recycled content. Concrete, steel, framing, drywall, and flooring contain recycled materials.
The Chemistry & Physics Building is UT Dallas’s eighth LEED-certified building in the last decade. It brings the university’s LEED-certified square footage to nearly 1.3 million. The University’s commitment to sustainability is a point of pride.
Within these walls, students become physicists. The undergraduate program offers both BS and BA degrees. The BS degree is for those pursuing further study in physics. The BA degree provides a physics background for other fields.
The graduate program delivers a solid foundation. It covers classical mechanics, electrodynamics, and quantum mechanics. Statistical mechanics and thermodynamics are also studied. The program develops individual creativity and expertise in physics. Faculty encourage students to participate in research from the beginning. Graduates work in industry, academia, and government.
The faculty are world-renowned experts. They conduct research in various fields. Atomic, molecular and optical physics are explored here. Astrophysics and cosmology are also researched. Other areas include biophysics and experimental condensed matter. Geophysics, high-energy physics, and nanotechnology are studied, too. Quantum information science, remote sensing, and space sciences are active areas of research. Finally, theoretical condensed matter rounds out the diverse research.
Remember the challenges faced during construction. Expanding the utility plant was necessary to support the new campus load. Congested utility corridors had to support the lab spaces. An optics lab with extremely stringent temperature and humidity requirements was installed. The project won Engineering News-Record’s 2021 Best Projects award. It won in the Higher Education/Research category.
