Tucked away in Marseille’s northern neighborhoods, Chemin du Vallon des Tuves tells a story of urban renewal and resilience. The Vallon des Tuves itself sits below La Savine, a large housing complex built on an isolated promontory. For decades, La Savine has been a focus of urban development, including significant demolitions. Chemin du Vallon des Tuves represents a link between the isolated community above and the bustling city below. The boulevard de Bosphore, a major artery in the northern districts, runs through this valley, connecting La Savine with the wider metropolitan infrastructure. The area has seen its share of challenges. Twenty years of urban policy, largely focused on demolition, led to increased density and gradual de-urbanization of La Savine. By 2012, almost half of the housing units were already demolished, many vacant. The discovery of asbestos ultimately sealed the fate of the existing buildings, making rehabilitation economically unfeasible. The entire population of La Savine, regardless of the extent of demolition, would need to be relocated. Chemin du Vallon des Tuves became key to the area’s revitalization. The redevelopment project, led by GIP MRU (Marseille Rénovation Urbaine), aimed to rebuild and better connect La Savine to the valley below. This involved concentrating public facilities and urban services around Chemin du Vallon des Tuves, fostering a stronger link to the heart of Marseille. This valley, with Chemin du Vallon des Tuves winding through it, became a strategic reconstruction site. Its proximity to the boulevard de Bosphore was critical, anchoring La Savine to the city and connecting it to the existing urban fabric. This revitalization brought new life to Chemin du Vallon des Tuves. A small neighborhood center with shops and a new community center now thrives along a wide mall. This mall opens onto the boulevard, leading to the newly created “Canal Park” and up to the rebuilt La Savine above. The story of Chemin du Vallon des Tuves is one of transformation, connecting a once isolated community with the vibrant energy of Marseille.
