“A path lined with trees,” I muse, “what stories could you tell?” This is the Chemin des Tilleuls. It is a private street in Paris’s 16th arrondissement. Specifically, it sits within the Villa Montmorency.

The Chemin des Tilleuls owes its name to its trees. “Tilleul” is French for “linden.” So, the street was planted with linden trees.

Let’s step back in time. In 1852, the land here was part of the Chateau de Boufflers. The chateau and its park were sold. This allowed for the creation of the Gare d’Auteuil. Also the neighboring Villa Montmorency was created. The Chemin des Tilleuls became part of this new development.

The avenue begins at 2, avenue du Square. It ends at 53, boulevard de Montmorency. The Chemin des Tilleuls stretches for 280 meters. It is 10 meters wide.

Even this tranquil avenue has seen moments of chaos. On September 15, 1918, a bomb fell here. It landed at number 12 avenue des Tilleuls. German planes carried out this raid during World War I.

Philosopher Henri Bergson lived at number 18. He resided here from 1859 to 1941.

Today, the Chemin des Tilleuls offers a quiet escape. It is a reminder of Paris’s blend of nature and history. As you walk along it, imagine the echoes of the past. Think of the philosopher at home. Think of the bombs falling during the war.

The Chemin des Tilleuls is more than just a street. It is a journey through time. It is a hidden gem within the city.
