“Marmouzets,” a child whispered, tracing the name on the street sign. “What a funny word!” We stand here, at the Chemin des Marmouzets in La Queue-en-Brie. This seemingly unassuming path holds a fascinating connection to a far more famous street in Paris. Our journey begins with a tale of two cities and a name that echoes across centuries. The Chemin des Marmouzets here in La Queue-en-Brie is linked through its name to the rue des Marmouzets in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. Let’s transport ourselves to the bustling heart of Paris, near the historic Gobelins Manufactory. The rue des Marmouzets, a mere 17 meters long, is tucked away, almost hidden between the rue des Gobelins and Boulevard Arago. This tiny pedestrian street got its name, not from small monkeys, but from an old shop sign. Now, picture medieval Paris. A street called “rue des Marmousets-en-la-Cité” existed on Île de la Cité. It was later renamed rue Chanoinesse. A separate “rue des Marmousets-Saint-Marcel”, near the Faubourg Saint-Marcel, eventually became our Parisian rue des Marmouzets. Originally, it was much longer, stretching 60 meters and passing by the Saint-Hippolyte church. The creation of Boulevard Arago during Haussmann’s renovations truncated it to its current diminutive size. Back to our Chemin des Marmouzets. While seemingly worlds apart from the Parisian street, the shared name sparks curiosity. It’s a reminder that even the smallest streets can hold intriguing stories, connecting us to a rich past, whispered through the rustling leaves and echoing across the centuries. The name “marmouset”, once adorning a Parisian shop sign, now marks this quiet path in La Queue-en-Brie. A reminder that history, like a whisper, can travel far.
