“Vincent,” a name echoing through the ages. This is the story of Chemin de la Croix Saint-Vincent in Paris. But who was Saint Vincent? Why does this path bear his name?

Chemin de la Croix Saint-Vincent is located in the 18th arrondissement. The rue Saint-Vincent derives its name from a former local landowner named Vincent Compoint.

Saint Vincent de Saragossa was a deacon. He was martyred in 304 in Valencia during the persecution of Diocletian. Recognized as a saint he is commemorated on January 22 by Catholics. Orthodox Christians celebrate him on November 11.

Saint Vincent’s life is known through scriptural sources. These writings include four sermons by Saint Augustine. Also, there is a work by the Spanish poet Prudence. These accounts were expanded upon in later centuries.

Saint Augustine highlighted Saint Vincent’s moral qualities. He said Vincent was victorious in his words and amid torments. He was victorious in confessing and suffering.

Prudence’s account tells of the confrontation between Saint Vincent and Judge Dacien. Vincent rejected idols and suffered torture. He refused to surrender sacred texts and was roasted on a grill. Dacien cast him into a dungeon filled with shards.

A supernatural light illuminated the prison. Angels comforted the martyr. The jailer reported this to the judge before converting.

After his death Saint Vincent’s soul ascended to heaven. His body was defended by a raven. Finally his body was thrown into the sea with a millstone.

Popular tradition holds Saint Vincent as the patron of winegrowers.

The fame of Saint Vincent spread widely. Churches were placed under his name. The saint’s tunic became a prized relic.

The cult of Saint Vincent flourished. Churches dedicated to him arose across Europe. Relics of the saint multiplied.

The story of Saint Vincent reminds us of faith. It speaks of resilience. His legacy continues.

Remember Saint Vincent de Saragossa. Consider his courage. This is the story behind the name of Chemin de la Croix Saint-Vincent.
