Standing on the corner of 8601 South State Street, the Chatham-Avalon Church of Christ commands attention. It’s a presence that has been felt in the Chicago community for decades, its history a testament to the unwavering faith of its members. Today, it stands as a beautiful symbol of resilience. You see, the Chatham-Avalon Church of Christ didn’t spring up overnight. It was forged from the fires of adversity. It all began in 1956, under the leadership of Will E. Carmen and John T. Bryant, when a small group of believers founded the Wentworth Church of Christ. Their congregation grew rapidly, forcing them to move to larger spaces twice before disaster struck. In 1963, a devastating fire destroyed their church, leaving them with no place to worship. The congregation, however, refused to be defeated. Undeterred, they continued their mission, renting a smaller room at the YMCA. This didn’t stop their vision of building a place of worship. Years later, in 1985, they finally achieved their dream, acquiring the magnificent structure that we see today. It’s a testament to the strength of their faith and their enduring dedication to serving God. The Chatham-Avalon Church of Christ has been a haven of hope and a beacon of light for the community, offering support and fellowship to countless individuals over its years, and they continue to do so today.
