“Once upon a time in Paris” sounds like the start of a fairy tale. But the story of the Château Rothschild is very real. It stands in Boulogne-Billancourt near Paris. The Château Rothschild has a rich history. It is currently undergoing a restoration to bring it back to its former glory.

Imagine stepping back in time. It is the mid-19th century. Baron James Mayer de Rothschild, a banker, decided to build a grand château. He wanted a residence fit for his growing dynasty. Construction began in 1855. The chosen style was Louis XIV. This aesthetic reflected majesty and opulence. Joseph-Armand Berthelin was the architect.

The Château Rothschild quickly became a hub. It attracted Parisian high society. Guests included President Adolphe Thiers and Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau. The Rothschild family thrived here for decades. James’s son, Edmond James de Rothschild, inherited the estate. Even after Edmond’s death in 1934, his daughter Alexandrine cared for the grounds.

The dark days of World War II brought upheaval. The German Navy, the Kriegsmarine, occupied the château. After France was liberated, American forces moved in. Another Rothschild residence, the Château de la Muette, also housed the Kriegsmarine and US forces. The family eventually gave up the property in the 1950s. It passed through different owners. Finally, it was abandoned. The château fell into disrepair for 37 years.

The Château Rothschild became a ruin. Graffiti covered its walls. Its roof partially collapsed. Balconies and staircases were near collapse. Locals called it the “ghost of Boulogne.”

In 2016, Novaxia, a property development group, purchased the château. They pledged to restore it. The restoration began in 2020. Architect Philippe Prost led the project. He had previously restored the Hôtel de la Monnaie in Paris. The goal is to restore the château to its original splendor. The restored Château Rothschild will be rented to private clients. It will offer 1,500 square meters of luxury living space.

The Château Rothschild’s story is one of grandeur. It reflects resilience and rebirth. From its construction in 1855 to its current restoration, it has witnessed history. It stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Rothschild family and French architectural heritage.
