Picture this a grand chateau nestled amidst rolling hills overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. This is Chateau Pastre in Marseille a place steeped in history and intrigue. Built in 1862 by the wealthy Pastre family it stands as a testament to their success. The Parisian architect Jean-Charles Danjoy designed this magnificent three-story building. Its elegant facade blends Marseille bricks with the warm blonde stone of Arles.

The chateau was more than just a home. It was a vibrant center for entertainment. The Pastre family hosted lavish gatherings within its walls. Imagine the sounds of laughter and music echoing through the grand rooms. A newspaper even described a play presented at Mme Pastre’s home.

But Chateau Pastre’s story is far from solely one of opulence. During World War II Countess Lily Pastre the chateau’s resident transformed it into a refuge. A sanctuary for artists and intellectuals fleeing the Nazi regime many of whom were Jewish. She risked her own safety sheltering these individuals. Countess Lily even organized a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Christian Dior himself designed the costumes using the chateau’s own draperies.

The chateau’s grounds are equally captivating. The Campagne Pastre a sprawling public park surrounds the chateau. Its 12 hectares of meticulously landscaped lawns woods and artificial lakes invite exploration. The remaining 100 hectares boast a wilder more natural beauty. This park offers a unique blend of formal gardens and untamed nature. Visitors can enjoy walking trails playgrounds and stunning views of Marseille.

Today Chateau Pastre stands as a significant part of Marseille’s heritage. Although the Faience Museum has moved its collection now rests in Chateau Borely the chateau itself remains a symbol of resilience and generosity. It continues to captivate visitors with its elegant architecture and rich history. This is not merely a building. It is a living legacy a testament to the enduring spirit of the Pastre family and the countless lives it has touched.
