Picture the Château du Grand Jardin. Imagine its Renaissance elegance standing before you. This magnificent château in Joinville Haute-Marne France has a story to tell. Built between 1533 and 1546 by Claude de Lorraine the first Duke of Guise it was initially a pleasure pavilion. It served as a place for grand festivities and entertaining esteemed guests.

The Château du Grand Jardin wasn’t just any building. It was designed as a showpiece of Renaissance architecture a testament to the Duke’s power and prestige. It complemented the nearby Château d’En-Haut the main residence of the Lords of Joinville. Unlike the older château this one was built on flat land. Its lush gardens quickly earned it its name.

King Francis I himself visited in 1546. He was royally entertained by the Duke. It’s likely that the Château du Grand Jardin was inaugurated during this visit. Throughout its history the château welcomed many notable figures. These included Henry II and his wife Catherine de Medici Francis II and Mary Stuart Charles IX and Henry III. Even Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu graced its halls.

The château’s interior was equally impressive. The main hall hosted lavish balls and receptions. A smaller apartment provided a private retreat for the Duke and Duchess. The southern side housed the Saint-Claude Chapel. It boasts a magnificent coffered ceiling. This chapel is now home to two caryatids. These are remnants of the Duke and Duchess’s monumental tomb.

After the Guise family line ended the château passed to the Dukes of Orléans. It nearly vanished in the mid-18th century. Plans to replace it with a gardener’s house and dovecote were luckily abandoned. The building was saved but underwent significant internal changes. The gardens evolved too. They were used for food crops and even a nursery for trees destined for roads. A royal road sadly halved the garden’s size. The remaining section became a public park.

Pierre-Hyacinthe-Félix Salin a master forger acquired the Château du Grand Jardin in 1856. He undertook major renovations including adding six large dormers and a balustrade. Jean-Joseph Picoré a landscape designer further transformed the gardens in the early 20th century. He introduced exotic tree species which gradually hid the château from view.

The Château du Grand Jardin has known both glory and neglect. World War II left it in a lamentable state occupied by soldiers of various nationalities. Yet in 1978 the Haute-Marne Department acquired the property. Restoration began. A Renaissance-style garden was recreated. The romantic park was restored. Today the Château du Grand Jardin offers 4.5 hectares of stunning grounds a blend of architectural and botanical heritage. It’s a testament to its enduring spirit and rich past. And it’s a treasure you can visit today.
