A majestic example of 19th-century neo-Gothic architecture. That’s Chateau des Montalets for you. It stands before you, a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of Meudon. Chateau des Montalets boasts intricate details and a commanding presence.

The name itself has a curious story. It originates from a place once known as “Les Montalais.” A simple spelling error transformed “Montalais” into “Montalets”. The name stuck, becoming synonymous with this elegant property. Interestingly, Chateau des Montalets wasn’t built on the original Montalais estate. It was constructed nearby. This often leads to confusion with the now-destroyed Chateau des Montalais.

Chateau des Montalets was built in the latter half of the 19th century. Francois Bouret, involved in operating the nearby quarries, commissioned its construction. With the opening of Boulevard des Deux Gares (now Boulevard Anatole-France), Bouret seized the opportunity. He envisioned a grand neo-Gothic residence complete with a beautifully enclosed park. The Chateau faced a significant challenge. The lower levels of the quarries flooded, threatening the site’s stability. Despite this, the chateau was completed. It stands today as a remarkable architectural achievement.

In the 20th century, Chateau des Montalets embarked on a new chapter. The PTT (Postes, Télégraphes et Téléphones) mutual society acquired it. It served as an orphanage for the children of its employees. Eventually, the property was sold to the city of Meudon. The city explored various public uses for the building, including transforming it into a school. They recognized Chateau des Montalets for its architectural significance and well-preserved state.

Despite its historical and architectural value, the chateau faced challenges. Its location above a network of quarries, some of which were flooded, posed risks. This eventually led the city to sell the property in 2003 for 2.2 million euros. While the manor itself was sold without renovation, its grandeur and history continue to captivate those who visit or reside in Meudon. Today, Chateau des Montalets is a symbol of Meudon’s rich tapestry of history.
