“The Battle of Mortefontaine.” The inscription on the monument sent shivers down my spine. Now, picture this: It’s September 2nd, 1914. The sun dips below the horizon, casting long shadows across the vast grounds of Château de Vallière. German soldiers, silent and stealthy, creep through the undergrowth. They’re the advance guard of the 3rd Infantry Division, and they’ve crossed the Ermenonville Forest, their eyes set on Paris. They believe victory is within their grasp. The Château de Vallière stands majestically before us, a silent witness to this clandestine operation. Built in 1894 for the Duke of Gramont, its neo-Gothic towers and Renaissance-inspired facades have seen their share of lavish parties and grand hunts. But tonight, the air crackles with tension. This is no soirée. This is war. Inside the Château, the rearguard of the French 56th Reserve Division has taken position. The 354th Infantry Regiment and the 69th Battalion of Foot Chasseurs are outnumbered, outgunned, but not out of courage. The clash is inevitable, a brutal struggle for every inch of ground. The Germans, caught off guard by the fierce resistance, suffer casualties. Two killed, thirty wounded – a high price to pay in what would be known as the closest battle to Paris. The Château de Vallière still bears the scars of that night, a stark reminder of the bravery shown and the lives lost. The monument we see today commemorates the French soldiers who fell defending their homeland, their sacrifice forever etched in the history of this grand estate.
