In 1739 a man named Pierre Durey d’Harnoncourt purchased an estate. This estate held the foundations of what would become the magnificent Château de Morsang. He chose to build his grand vision, the current château, upon the site where the first lords of Morsang had their humble dwelling – a “maison plate”. The Château de Morsang wasn’t destined to stay solely within the Durey d’Harnoncourt lineage. It eventually passed to his daughter, who married a man named Louis Jean de Bertier de Sauvigny. Years later, in 1788, the reins of the château were taken up by Louis Benigne François de Bertier. As the Intendant of the Generalitat of Paris, he held a position of significant power. However, the tumultuous tides of the French Revolution swept in, cutting his life tragically short in the early days of the uprising. The château changed hands several times after the de Bertier family. Then in 1909, a descendant, Christian de Bertier, bought back the Château de Morsang. His vision led to extensive renovations. He added a grand gallery that seamlessly connected the two returning wings and a new wedding hall that elegantly completed the northern facade. The year 1946 marked another step in the château’s evolution. The diocesan association added a structure that linked the 18th-century château to the 16th-century commons. It stands today as a testament to the passage of time and the many stories held within its walls.
