Deep within the heart of Gagny, stands the Château de Montguichet. Its walls whisper tales of centuries past. A grand estate, it has witnessed a fascinating evolution. Originally built in the 18th century, Château de Montguichet replaced an older, possibly medieval, structure. Although no concrete evidence supports this claim, the air of history lingers. Imagine the echoes of noble families and intriguing figures who graced its halls. Jean-Baptiste Silva, one of Louis XV’s physicians, purchased the estate in 1729. Dr. Silva penned the notable “Treatise on the Use of Different Kinds of Bleeding, Especially That of the Foot”. Later, the Hocquart family, descendants of the lords of Montfermeil, took ownership. They held the Château de Montguichet until the French Revolution swept through the nation. Declared a national asset, the château changed hands many times. Around 1893, Baron de Laumont acquired it, eventually bequeathing it to his daughter, Countess Marquiset. Her son, Armand Marquiset, a remarkable figure, founded the Petits Frères des Pauvres (Little Brothers of the Poor). He generously donated the Château de Montguichet to this worthy organization. Since then, it has served as a benevolent institution. Today, the Château de Montguichet offers respite and community for the elderly. Its nine-hectare park provides a tranquil sanctuary. It remains a testament to Armand Marquiset’s vision. He saw the potential to transform this historical landmark into a haven. The château’s doors have even opened for special events, like the European Heritage Days. Visitors can explore the facade, the interior, and the serene park. They learn about the Marquiset family and their connection to this remarkable château. The Château de Montguichet is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to history’s enduring power, a place where the past and present intertwine.
