Hidden amidst the Norman countryside, Château de la Motte whispers tales of intrigue and resilience. The château’s story begins, not with elegant stone, but with a simple earthen mound, a Viking motte-and-bailey castle. This strategic location, likely chosen for its seven water sources, became the heart of Château de la Motte. The name itself, “La Motte,” refers to this very mound, a testament to the château’s Viking origins.

The first written record of Château de la Motte appears in 1217. Guillaume Lesor, seeking the French king’s protection, mentioned the château in a letter. Over the centuries, the château evolved. From a modest fortified farm, possibly used by local lords, it gradually transformed. Think of the simple, practical buildings surrounding a courtyard, designed for defense as much as for living. The architecture reflected the Norman landscape, oriented to protect against southwestern storms.

Château de la Motte passed through many hands. The Montgomerys, a name etched in French history, became linked to the château through marriage. Gabriel de Montgomery II, whose father accidentally killed King Henry II in a joust, inherited Château de la Motte. Later, the Ango family, wealthy bourgeois, acquired the estate. They expanded the château and its grounds, seeking the prestigious title of Marquis.

Perhaps the most remarkable chapter in Château de la Motte’s story unfolded during World War II. It became a haven for the Resistance. Allied pilots, escaping capture, found refuge within its walls. A hidden arms depot lay concealed, a secret that, when discovered, led to tragedy. The local mayor, caught in the crossfire, was assassinated. The château, once a place of peace, became a center of conflict.

Even amidst war, life continued at Château de la Motte. It served as a dairy farm, a holiday home for Parisian prostitutes, and a boarding school for young girls seeking refuge from the bombings. The château’s grounds witnessed a German plane crashing into the pond, a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict. The Liberation brought both relief and change. The Noels, the château’s wartime owners, continued their work, distributing rationing coupons in the post-war years.

Château de la Motte, with its rich history and enduring spirit, stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. From Viking origins to wartime refuge, the château has witnessed centuries of change. Today, as you stand before its walls, remember the stories it holds. Imagine the lives lived within its walls, the secrets whispered in its corridors. Château de la Motte is more than just a building. It is a living memory.
