Gazing upon Château de Grandchamp, one might hear whispers of its storied past. This isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a time capsule, blending centuries of history into a unique architectural masterpiece. Château de Grandchamp elegantly combines two distinct styles. The older section, a grand wooden pavilion, dates back to the latter half of the 16th century. Two square towers, each with four progressively receding stories and topped with a bell-shaped roof and lantern, flank the pavilion. The warm hues of the brick and tile infill contrast strikingly with the dark wood framing. A later addition, built during the reign of Louis XIV, extends from the pavilion. This section, constructed of brick and stone, reflects the classic style of the era. Arched arcades grace the ground floor, while large windows with lowered lintels illuminate the first floor. The roofline is punctuated by elegant dormers of varying heights, alternating square openings and bull’s-eye windows. Château de Grandchamp’s grounds are equally impressive. A large courtyard leads to a vast rectangular garden, once enclosed by walls and moats. These moats were fed by a diversion of the nearby Vie River, which still flows through the adjacent meadow. The history of Château de Grandchamp is intertwined with the Le Prévost family. They were the marquises of Saint-Julien-le-Faucon, and Grandchamp was part of their holdings in the 17th and 18th centuries. It’s believed that a member of this family commissioned the construction of the château, or at least the older section. It served as their primary residence. In the 14th century, Jean Barate was the seigneur of Grandchamp. Later, in 1463, Montfaut found Jean d’Anesy there. Through marriage, the Château de Grandchamp eventually passed to the Montault family. Around 1769, Armand de Montault, who married Marie-Henriette-Suzanne-Perrine Le Prévost, became the owner of the seigneurie of Grandchamp. His grandson, the Count of Montault, later inherited the estate. Although the château has been unoccupied for many years, it remains a testament to its rich past and the families who called it home. It stands as a captivating blend of architectural styles and a reminder of the grandeur of a bygone era.
