Coco Chanel’s ghost still wanders the halls of Château de Crémat. Or so the locals whisper, as they sip the renowned Bellet wine produced on these very slopes. Château de Crémat isn’t just a beautiful fortress overlooking Nice. It’s a place where history, fashion, and wine intertwine. Built in 1906 by an olive oil merchant, Château de Crémat initially resembled a medieval fortress. Its design evolved over time, mirroring the flamboyant architecture of the grand luxury hotels along the French Riviera. The Château became a playground for the era’s biggest stars. But it was Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel who truly left her mark here in the late 1920s. Look closely at the stained-glass windows. You might spot the interlocking “C”s that inspired Chanel’s iconic logo. She borrowed and subtly modified the Château’s emblem, creating a symbol recognized worldwide. The current owners, a French industrial family, acquired the estate in 2017 and embarked on extensive renovations. Their goal was to transform Château de Crémat into a cultural hub while respecting Nice’s traditions, particularly the famous red color of its facades. These vibrant hues of yellow, ochre, blue, green, and red date back to when Nice was part of the House of Savoy. The tradition of painting facades in these colors reflects the Italian customs of the time. And red is the most emblematic color of this Azure capital. Beyond the magnificent reception halls, the beautifully landscaped gardens are a source of pride for the owners. These idyllic spaces provide an enchanting backdrop for art exhibitions and candlelit classical music concerts during warm summer evenings. A visit to Château de Crémat reminds you that the French Riviera offers more than just its glitzy seaside. The hinterland and its hills hold their own secrets and treasures, just waiting to be discovered. So next time you raise a glass of Bellet, remember the whispers of Coco Chanel and the rich tapestry of history woven within the walls of Château de Crémat.
