Did the walls of Château de Champs-sur-Marne whisper secrets of royal intrigue and literary giants? We stand before this elegant neoclassical château, a testament to 18th-century French grandeur. Château de Champs-sur-Marne wasn’t always a public treasure. It began as a pleasure house, designed by Pierre Bullet for Charles Renouard de la Touane in 1699. Financial troubles led to a change in ownership. Paul Poisson de Bourvalais, another financier, continued the project. His son, Jean-Baptiste Bullet de Chamblain, completed the Château de Champs-sur-Marne in 1706. A decade later, Poisson landed in the Bastille for embezzlement. The Crown seized Château de Champs-sur-Marne. It was later sold to the Princesse de Conti, a daughter of Louis XIV. She then deeded it to the Duc de La Vallière. This marked the beginning of Château de Champs-sur-Marne’s vibrant social life. The Duke, a close friend of Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour, transformed the château. Around 1750, he commissioned the exquisite rococo salon chinois, adorned with Christophe Huet’s captivating murals. Château de Champs-sur-Marne became a hub for the era’s intellectual elite. Voltaire, Diderot, and d’Alembert graced its halls, engaging in lively discussions. Madame de Pompadour herself even leased Château de Champs-sur-Marne for a time, adding her own touch to its lavish interiors. The decades that followed saw Château de Champs-sur-Marne pass through various hands, including those of a rich shipowner and the Santerre family. Finally, in 1895, Comte Louis Cahen d’Anvers purchased the estate. He undertook a meticulous restoration, returning Château de Champs-sur-Marne to its former glory. He even incorporated boiseries from the Hôtel de Mayenne in Paris. The gardens were redesigned, creating a harmonious blend of French formality and English naturalism. In the 20th century, Château de Champs-sur-Marne served as a residence for visiting heads of state before opening to the public in 1974. Today, as we admire Château de Champs-sur-Marne, we can almost hear the echoes of its illustrious past. From royal scandals to literary salons, this architectural gem has witnessed centuries of French history unfold within its walls.
