Can you imagine a château so grand, it was meant to have three wings? Yet, here stands Château d’Arnouville, a testament to ambition and unfortunate circumstance. Château d’Arnouville’s story begins in the mid-18th century with Jean-Baptiste de Machault d’Arnouville, a powerful minister under King Louis XV. Machault, already a wealthy man, inherited a simple pavilion on this site in 1750. He immediately envisioned something far grander. He commissioned the renowned architects Pierre Contant d’Ivry and Jean-Michel Chevotet to design a magnificent U-shaped château.

Construction on Château d’Arnouville began in 1751. Machault spared no expense. He even went so far as to relocate the entire village to create a grand square in front of his future home, hoping to impress the king. The east wing, the only one completed, stretches out before you, its 18 windows and skylights hinting at the intended scale of the entire project. Imagine a bustling courtyard, carriages arriving, and dignitaries ascending the grand staircase within. The foundations of the unfinished wings still trace the intended U-shape. They offer a poignant reminder of what might have been.

At the end of the east wing, you’ll find the jewel of Château d’Arnouville: the chapel. Its Saracen dome, a signature of Contant d’Ivry, is a unique architectural feature. It echoes the architect’s work at the Abbey of Penthemont in Paris. The dome’s brick and plaster construction, known as “à la roussillonne,” was a technique Contant introduced north of the Loire River. The orangery, a separate building, also survives. It features a beautiful Louis XV fireplace, described as “decorated with a Doric order.” It once stood beside a reflecting pool.

Unfortunately, Machault’s fortunes changed. He fell out of favor with the king in 1757, halting the construction of Château d’Arnouville. He retreated to his partially completed home, his grand vision unrealized. The château’s story continued through the French Revolution, multiple owners, and even a stint as a Rothschild property. The Baroness de Rothschild, in a controversial move, removed the original 18th-century entrance gate. She installed it at Vaux-de-Cernay Abbey, replacing it with the simpler gate you see today.

Today, Château d’Arnouville serves a noble purpose. It houses a therapeutic and educational institute for adolescents. The grounds, once envisioned as a grand park, now provide a peaceful setting for these students. They learn horticulture, tending the gardens and keeping the legacy of Château d’Arnouville alive.
