Established in 1906 the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering stands before you. Its history is rich. It began as the Institute of Plumbers. The initial focus was on both the industrial and technical sides of plumbing. However by 1925 the industrial and commercial aspects were taken over by the Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors. The Institute then focused on education training and technical matters. It became the Institute of Plumbing in 1957.
A significant merger occurred in 1970. The Institute merged with the Registered Plumbers Association. This brought the management of the Register of Plumbers under their wing. This register itself dates back to 1886. It was originally managed by the Worshipful Company of Plumbers.
In 1979 a change happened. The Institute became a registered educational charity. Its mission was to protect public health. They aimed to do this through strong qualified membership. Their competency and technical expertise were key. The goal was technical excellence to benefit the public.
The name evolved again in 2004. It became the Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering. Four years later a royal charter was granted. In July 2008 it became the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering.
Further growth came in 2019. The Institute of Domestic Heating and Environmental Engineering joined CIPHE. This created a single body representing the UK plumbing and heating industry.
Today the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering boasts over 6600 members. These individuals include consultants specifiers designers engineers lecturers trainers and practitioners. The CIPHE also plays a vital role in the ongoing education and development of the industry’s next generation. It offers training programs and resources helping to maintain high standards of plumbing and heating expertise across the United Kingdom. It’s more than just an institute. It’s a testament to the vital role plumbing and heating play in our daily lives. And it’s a cornerstone for the future of this crucial industry.
