Can you imagine a university student center that’s also an architectural marvel? We’re standing before the Charles Hostler Student Center, a hub of activity and a testament to sustainable design. The Charles Hostler Student Center opened its doors in 2008. It’s named after Charles Warren Hostler, an AUB alumnus and former ambassador, whose generous donation made this space a reality. The Charles Hostler Student Center isn’t just a building. It’s a collection of interconnected spaces, designed to foster a sense of community while minimizing its environmental footprint. The center boasts state-of-the-art athletic facilities. There’s a 25-meter swimming pool, multi-sports courts, squash courts, a running track, and even a green field. Beyond athletics, the Charles Hostler Student Center houses an auditorium, meeting rooms, a cafeteria with study areas, and underground parking. The architects, VJAA, envisioned a space that blended seamlessly with the existing campus and the natural environment. They rejected the idea of a single, massive structure in favor of multiple building volumes woven together by courtyards, walkways, and spectator areas. This design not only preserves the existing landscape but also creates a microclimate. Cool air flows down from the shaded upper campus towards the sea, keeping the area naturally ventilated. The Charles Hostler Student Center is a beacon of sustainability. Solar panels heat the pool water, and excess thermal energy contributes to chilled water production. Rooftop gardens, or “green roofs,” provide social gathering spaces at night, connecting to the theater, cafe, and gymnasium. The center utilizes a unique cooling system, crucial given Lebanon’s sometimes unreliable electrical grid. It even collects rainwater for irrigation and treats gray water for flushing toilets. The Charles Hostler Student Center is more than just a student center. It’s a symbol of innovation, sustainability, and community, nestled within the heart of AUB. It stands as a reminder that even amidst a bustling city, spaces can be designed to harmonize with nature and enhance the lives of those who use them.
