Is it possible for one man to embody the spirit of Texas? We’re standing before the Charles C. Stibbens Plaque. Here, in this peaceful cemetery, rests a man who truly lived a Texas tale. The Charles C. Stibbens Plaque commemorates a man who, though not born in Texas, arrived in 1835 and immediately embraced its fight for independence. Stibbens fought in the Battle of San Jacinto, a pivotal moment that secured Texas’ freedom. But Stibbens’ story wasn’t confined to the battlefield. He was a man of many trades, working as a farmer and a shoemaker in Anderson County. He started a family with his first wife, Julie Ann Frost Slaughter, and later, after her passing, with Elizabeth Creekman. They had eleven children together. In 1870, Charles and Elizabeth moved to Saint Paul. Charles C. Stibbens, a veteran of the Texas Revolution, rests here. He is a testament to the pioneering spirit that defines so much of Texas history.
