In 1966, a seed was planted at Geylang Chinese Methodist Church that would blossom into the Charis Methodist Church we know today. It began as a Methodist Youth Fellowship, a vibrant gathering energized by an evening English worship service. Bishop Lundy inaugurated this service, and the late Rev. Fang Ming Teck provided pastoral guidance. Charis Methodist Church continued to grow under the wing of Geylang Chinese Methodist Church. Then in 1989, a significant milestone was reached. Charis Methodist Church became an autonomous church. This transition marked its official recognition under the Chinese Annual Conference of The Methodist Church in Singapore. This wasn’t just an administrative change. It was a testament to the growing congregation and its dedication to its faith. Fast forward to 1993, Charis Methodist Church found its permanent home at 91 Koon Seng Road. This property, formerly owned by Pentecost Methodist Church, became the church’s sanctuary. Today, Charis Methodist Church thrives with a congregation of around 650 members. Its vision, “a people after God’s heart”, resonates through its various ministries. The church strives to be a beacon of faith in its neighborhood, welcoming newcomers and nurturing a strong sense of community. Charis Methodist Church also actively engages with the local community through initiatives like the Charis Activity Centre for Elders (ACE). This partnership with Methodist Welfare Services demonstrates the church’s commitment to serving those around them. Two unique ministries stand out at Charis Methodist Church: the choir and the Joo Chiat Ministry. The choir, with its rich history, plays a vital role in worship and fundraising. The Joo Chiat Ministry focuses on outreach to the night-time community along Joo Chiat Road. Through small gifts and shared moments, they extend the love of Christ to restaurant workers and others who work late into the night. The church’s location in a residential area presents parking challenges. However, recent re-zoning by the Urban Redevelopment Authority promises a brighter future. This change paves the way for redevelopment, integrating the church block with the House of Peniel. While the cost is substantial, the congregation’s faith remains unwavering. They believe that God will provide for this ambitious endeavor, further solidifying Charis Methodist Church’s place in the community.
