Characato has its roots in the colonial period. It was then known as an important agricultural area. Over the years, the neighborhood has preserved its traditional character. This gives it an authentic and welcoming atmosphere.

El Characato’s history extends back before the Spanish. The Uros or Puquinas were the first inhabitants. They settled along the Canchismayo River. This river had abundant water. The water came from the Coantaca hill’s springs.
Many of these places still have their names today. They include Cuta Cuta. Also Chuchapampa. And Quisco. Then Cancahuani. Also Yanayaco.
Characato’s origins are pre-Inca. The first inhabitants settled permanently here. Archaeological remains prove this. They have been found in the Coronado hill. Also in the cemeteries of Quisco. Then San Francisco. Also San Cosme. Then Cancahuani. Also La Rinconada. And Cacapata.
Around 1200 AD the Inca Empire dominated the Collas or Aymaras. The Inca Mayta Capac arrived at the Chili River. He found tribes from the Uros or Puquinas and the Collas or Aymaras. Some army chiefs asked to stay. They wanted to settle here. The Inca said Ariquepay. This means Stay here.
The Spanish founded Arequipa on August 15 1540. They called it Villa Hermosa de Nuestra Senora de la Asunta. This was in the La Chimba neighborhood.
The Spanish founding of Characato may have occurred on June 24 1541. A small hermitage was blessed. It was erected where the current church stands. This church was dedicated to San Juan Bautista. Since then, Characato adopted the name San Juan Bautista de Characato. San Juan Bautista is recognized as its patron saint.
In the 16th century the encomienda of San Juan Bautista de Characato was established. Don Pedro Godinez was in charge. Later the Corregimiento of Characato y Vitor was created on September 5 1565. This was due to high agricultural production. Also its strategic location. And the amount of indigenous tribute.
Characato is a district since 1825. This came from indirect recognition in the Constitution of 1823.
According to Leonidas Bernedo, Characato comes from the Puquina word SCHIARAKATES. This means hill of shining peaks. Another interpretation is SHARACCATO. This means Maize Market.
