Did you know that the Chapelle Sainte-Jeanne-de-France in Paris is a testament to faith and architectural innovation? This neo-Gothic chapel is at 32 Avenue Reille. It stands as a tribute to Saint Joan of Arc.
Marie de la Passion initiated its construction in 1911. She wanted to celebrate Joan of Arc’s beatification. The Chapelle Sainte-Jeanne-de-France was completed in 1913.
The Chapelle Sainte-Jeanne-de-France features a reinforced concrete structure. Its design was inspired by the Sainte-Chapelle. Édouard Bérard drafted the plans. After his death in 1912, Paul Courcoux completed the church.
Inside the Chapelle Sainte-Jeanne-de-France, detailed stained glass windows depict Joan of Arc’s journey. They illuminate the space with vibrant colors. The windows represent important cities from her life. These include Rouen, Domrémy and Orléans.
Look up to the keystone. Six angels support a crown. The crown integrates Joan of Arc’s motto. It reads “De par le Roi du ciel” along with the dates 1412-1431. The chapel also houses three bells. They are named Marie, Jeanne and Michel-Jeanne.
The main stained glass window is behind the altar. It shows Joan of Arc entering Orléans. She is delivering the city. She is on her horse. Her banner displays the colors of Jesus and Mary. A cheering crowd surrounds her.
Other windows honor Saint Catherine and Saint Margaret. Also Saint Michael is depicted. These saints called Joan of Arc to her mission. They wanted her to save France and King Charles VII. Donors’ names are at the bottom of each window.
Notice the walls of the Chapelle Sainte-Jeanne-de-France. Joan of Arc’s coat of arms is above each door. It features a sword in a crown. Two golden lilies are on a blue field.
Since 2020, the Archdiocese of Paris owns the Chapelle Sainte-Jeanne-de-France. Previously, the congregation of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary oversaw it.
