Hidden within the walls of the Quinze-Vingts National Ophthalmology Hospital lies the Chapelle Saint-Remi. This unassuming chapel holds centuries of history. It whispers tales of kings and knights. It echoes with the prayers of the visually impaired.

The Chapelle Saint-Remi is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to resilience and faith. Originally part of the Caserne des Mousquetaires Noirs. It was built between 1699 and 1704 by Robert de Cotte. This elegant structure stands as a relic of that era.

But its story doesn’t begin there. Long before the black musketeers occupied the site. King Saint Louis established the Quinze-Vingts hospital. This was in the 13th century. He dedicated it to helping those blinded in the crusades. The original chapel stood on Rue Saint-Honoré. It was dedicated to Saint Remy.

When the hospital moved to its current location in 1779. The Chapelle Saint-Remi came along. It was enlarged in 1789. Three extra sections and a gallery were added. Some of the original furnishings were moved from the old chapel. This included precious stained-glass windows. These windows depicted the Virgin Mary and Saints Louis Remy Joseph and John the Baptist.

The French Revolution brought turmoil. The chapel was looted and closed between 1793 and 1800. Later it served as a parish church. It also served as a chapel for the hospice. Two more stained-glass windows were added in 1892. These were in the neo-Renaissance style. They used rich blues and reds. They were distinctly Gallican and Legitimist in inspiration.

The hospital underwent significant changes in the mid-20th century. The nave of the chapel was demolished and rebuilt. A decision to destroy the chapel entirely was averted in 1976. It was listed as a Historic Monument protecting it from destruction.

Today the Chapelle Saint-Remi continues its unique mission. It provides comfort and spiritual solace to patients. It also provides this to their families. It also serves the visually impaired residents of the Saint Louis residence. The recently restored statues of Saint Louis and the Virgin Mary stand proudly within. They are a visible reminder of the chapel’s enduring spirit. The Chapelle Saint-Remi is a poignant reminder of history. It stands as a sanctuary of faith in the heart of Paris.
