Did it really happen here? Right here in the Chapelle Saint-Paul? Believe it or not, a scandalous wedding took place on February 15, 1843. The bride and groom? None other than Léopoldine Hugo, daughter of the famous Victor Hugo, and Charles Vacquerie. They married in secret because of their young age and Charles’s lack of wealth. Imagine the whispers that must have filled the Chapelle Saint-Paul if the secret had gotten out. Sadly, their joy was short-lived. Just seven months later, Léopoldine drowned in a tragic boating accident. A heartbroken Victor Hugo was so moved by his daughter’s wedding in this very chapel that he used the Chapelle Saint-Paul as the setting for another famous wedding in his novel Les Misérables: Cosette and Marius’s marriage. Today, the Chapelle Saint-Paul stands as a testament to both joy and sorrow, love and loss.
