Hidden amidst the urban landscape of Saint-Gratien, the Chapelle Saint-Paul des Raguenets stands as a testament to community spirit and resilience. This unassuming structure, built in the 1970s with the help of the Chantiers du Cardinal, has witnessed a fascinating history. The Chapelle Saint-Paul des Raguenets originally served a burgeoning population in the Saint-Gratien/Argenteuil area, bridging two social housing estates. Its creation fulfilled the three requirements for establishing a new parish in 1960s France: population growth, a chapel, and a pastoral residence. The decree establishing the Chapelle Saint-Paul des Raguenets parish, signed by the Bishop of Pontoise, took effect on January 31, 1967. Originally under the Argenteuil deanery, it’s now part of the Enghien – Montmorency deanery. Tragedy struck in November 1970 when a fire, its cause shrouded in mystery, partially destroyed the prefabricated structure. Undeterred, the community rallied, and with the support of the Chantiers du Cardinal and a Christian association called “Le Porche,” the Chapelle Saint-Paul des Raguenets was rebuilt between 1972 and 1973. The innovative, adaptable design was praised for its efficient use of space, accommodating various gatherings in its multipurpose hall. The Chapelle Saint-Paul des Raguenets was consecrated on October 27, 1973, marking a new chapter in its life. Its unique triangular roofline, emerging from a flat top, symbolizes a tent pitched by God amidst the city. This design, along with the building’s modular layout, has made it a versatile space for the community. Today, the Chapelle Saint-Paul des Raguenets faces new challenges. The roof requires extensive waterproofing, and the interior needs renovations to better serve the community. The Chantiers du Cardinal, recognizing its importance, has pledged €200,000 for these much-needed renovations. These renovations, scheduled for completion in September 2023, will transform the Chapelle Saint-Paul des Raguenets into a vibrant “third place,” fostering community connection and offering various activities. The chapel will be renamed Saint-Paul des Nations, reflecting the diverse neighborhood it serves. This renewed space will host a range of activities, from a children’s program to Bible study groups, parent meetings, and workshops. It will also house a soap-making workshop employing people with disabilities and continue its tradition of a monthly open table, bringing people together for fellowship and shared meals. The Chapelle Saint-Paul des Raguenets, in its new iteration as Saint-Paul des Nations, promises to continue its mission of serving the community and strengthening bonds, a symbol of hope and resilience in the heart of Saint-Gratien.
