The soaring spire of Chapelle Saint-Leon pierces the Parisian sky. Its beauty is breathtaking.

Chapelle Saint-Leon stands proudly in the 15th arrondissement. It’s more than just a church. It’s a testament to faith resilience and artistic brilliance. Its construction spanned decades reflecting the spirit of post-war France.

The first stone was laid in 1924. Cardinal Louis Dubois oversaw the ceremony. The church’s namesake Pope Leo the Great is honored. The dedication also remembers Leon Thelier and his son Marcel. Leon’s wife funded the building. Marcel a Jesuit priest died serving France.

Construction wasn’t a simple undertaking. It took ten years to complete the initial structure. The design by Emile Brunet is a masterpiece of Art Deco style. The building is concrete clad in brick. It’s a unique blend of modern materials and classical aesthetics. The interior is adorned with stunning mosaics by Auguste Labouret. These mosaics depict scenes from the life of Pope Leo the Great. They’re truly captivating.

The stained glass windows are equally remarkable. Created by Louis Barillet they illustrate the mysteries of the Rosary. The bas-reliefs are the work of Henri Bouchard and Auguste Cornu. The exquisite metalwork throughout including the communion rails is the handiwork of Raymond Subes. These elements combine to create an atmosphere of serenity and awe.

Chapelle Saint-Leon is more than a place of worship. It’s a community hub. It once housed a theatre a catechism hall and numerous parish rooms. This speaks to the church’s role in the lives of its parishioners. Even today it continues to serve the community.

The Chapelle Saint-Leon was completed in 1934. Its completion marked a significant milestone for the parish. Cardinal Emmanuel Suhard presided over the dedication. It lasted over six hours. He consecrated twelve consecration crosses. The church’s organ a 32-stop instrument was acquired from Dole. Cardinal Suhard blessed it in 1936.
