Marvelous isn’t it? This is Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Victoires. A place steeped in history faith and royal victories.
Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Victoires is more than just a beautiful church. It’s a living testament to faith and royal devotion. King Louis XIII founded it in 1629. He dedicated it to the Virgin Mary. This was in thanks for his victories over the Protestants. The Siege of La Rochelle was particularly important. The first stone was laid on December 9th a significant date. A temporary wooden chapel decorated with tents and tapestries marked the occasion. The previous day Archbishop de Gondi planted a cross marking the church’s future location.
Years later Brother Fiacre an Augustinian monk had a series of visions. He saw the Virgin Mary with the future Louis XIV the long-awaited heir to the throne. This vision led to Queen Anne of Austria’s pregnancy and the birth of Louis XIV. The Virgin requested nine days of prayer at three locations: Notre-Dame des Grâces in Cotignac Notre-Dame de Paris and of course Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Victoires.
Following Brother Fiacre’s revelation Louis XIII vowed to consecrate France to the Virgin Mary. This act was repeated centuries later by Prince Xavier a Bourbon. A scroll bearing the arms of France was placed at the foot of the Virgin Mary’s statue. A testament to the enduring faith of the Bourbon dynasty.
In 1674 another chapel was added dedicated to Our Lady of Savona. Brother Fiacre himself oversaw this construction. Louis XIV financed it. Sadly the statue from Savona disappeared during the French Revolution. The church itself was used for other purposes for a while. It served as the first home of the Paris Bourse. It only fully regained its religious function in 1809.
In 1836 Abbot Charles-Éléonore Dufriche Desgenettes heard a divine command. He was instructed to consecrate the parish to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. His devotion inspired many. He even secured the conversion of a formerly staunch Voltairean. This reflects the church’s ongoing role as a refuge for sinners. The incredible growth of his prayer association might have even contributed to the 1854 proclamation of the Immaculate Conception.
The Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Victoires stands today a stunning testament to faith perseverance and royal patronage. The thousands of ex-votos left by grateful worshippers are a powerful reminder of answered prayers and enduring faith. Take a moment to reflect on this remarkable history.
