A chapel of joy. That’s the essence of Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Liesse. Here, nestled in the heart of France, stands a testament to faith, miracles, and the enduring power of hope. Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Liesse, Our Lady of Joy, has drawn pilgrims seeking solace and inspiration since the 12th century. The current structure, a minor basilica, replaced an older church in the 13th and 14th centuries. It’s a place steeped in history, its stones whispering tales of royal visits and miraculous interventions.

The legend of Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Liesse is captivating. Three Knights Hospitaller, brothers Jean, Hector, and Henri of the noble house of Eppes, were captured during the Crusades. Imprisoned by the Sultan of Egypt, they resisted conversion to Islam, their faith unwavering. Angels brought them a small statue of Our Lady for comfort. The Sultan’s daughter, Ismeria, was sent to convert them. Instead, she embraced Christianity, aided by the Madonna’s miraculous appearance. Together, they escaped. During their flight, they miraculously transported to Northern France. They awoke near their family castle. Filled with joy, they built a church, Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Liesse, to house the Madonna. Ismeria was baptized in Laon Cathedral. Some versions of the legend say she married one of the brothers.

Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Liesse wasn’t just a local treasure. It became a favored pilgrimage site for French royalty, including Louis VII, Charles VI, and Charles VII. The devotion to Our Lady of Joy spread throughout France, especially in Normandy. Churches dedicated to her sprang up. Her veneration extended beyond France to Belgium, Canada, and Malta. The Jesuits carried the devotion to Africa in the 19th century. Even literary figures like Oscar Wilde found solace in her presence. He made a pilgrimage to Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Liesse during his exile in Berneval, calling it a “miracle” and a source of “joy.”

This holy site has endured trials. In the late 16th century, Protestant troops looted and burned the church. It was later restored. The French Revolution brought further destruction, but again, Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Liesse rose from the ashes. Today, it stands as a beacon of faith, a place where the whispers of history mingle with the prayers of pilgrims. The story of Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Liesse reminds us that even in the darkest of times, hope and joy can prevail.
