Built in the 1930s, the Chapelle des Franciscains is a fascinating example of modern religious architecture, a true gem nestled in the heart of Paris’s 14th arrondissement. The Franciscan Friars had been in France since the time of Saint Francis of Assisi, and their Parisian presence started back in 1219. The friars, known as Cordeliers, initially established their order in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés area, eventually moving to the 14th arrondissement, with their current convent and chapel constructed between 1934 and 1935. The Chapel has a unique mix of medieval Gothic inspirations and modern design, with the red brick construction adding a warm color to the stone and glass. The stunning stained glass windows were crafted between 1936 and 1947 by André Pierre and Pierre Villette. The chapel feels bright and airy, with the light filtering through the windows creating a kaleidoscope of colors on the floor. The windows depict saints of the Franciscan order and scenes from the Canticle of the Sun, one of the most beautiful devotional poems in literature. The friars continue to live a life of prayer and service here, and they are always ready to welcome any visitor who wishes to step into their tranquil space. You can find the Chapelle des Franciscains at 7 Rue Marie-Rose.
