Could this unassuming building possibly house a sacred space? Here before us stands the Chapelle de l’Agneau de Dieu. It is a place of peace amid the urban bustle. This chapel offers solace to travelers and workers alike.
The Chapelle de l’Agneau de Dieu is located at 2 Place Henri Fernay. That is at the eastern end of Place Chalon. It runs along the Gare de Lyon. The Chapelle occupies the ground floor of the last building on the square.
Cardinal Lustiger commissioned six chapels. This is one of them. Stanislas Fischer conceived the Chapelle de l’Agneau de Dieu in 1997. M. Schwinn realized the design.
From a distance you can read the word Chapelle. In smaller letters it says Voici l’Agneau de Dieu meaning Here is the Lamb of God. Roselyne Granet created the bronze sculpture above the entrance. It shows Christ opening his arms to the world. At his feet Saint John the Baptist announces his coming. He holds the Cross and the Lamb.
The Chapelle de l’Agneau de Dieu is part of the Saint-Antoine des 15/20 parish. It welcomes travelers and people passing through. It also welcomes those working in nearby offices. The chapel is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The Agneau de Dieu includes a large hall. It opens onto Place Chalon. Here you’ll find a reception desk. There is also a stone basin for holy water. Display cases and posters are present. This hall leads down to a large meeting room in the basement.
The chapel can accommodate 100 people. It has the shape of an elongated trapezoid. A Romanesque stoup greets visitors. The altar is at the point of the triangle. Behind the wall is the sacristy. Christophe Pillet created the brushed steel candlesticks ambo tabernacle and cross. Simple decorative stained glass illuminates the chapel. Cousino signed the one on the right.
A Gothic Virgin Mary statue stands here. Representations of Saint Therese and Saint Bernadette decorate the space. A Stations of the Cross is displayed. A small organ provides music for ceremonies.
The 25th anniversary of the dedication of the altar was recently celebrated. The Chapelle de l’Agneau de Dieu invites locals to share crepes. This helps them get acquainted with the parish and the Church.
Juan Luis Cousiño created a stained glass window for the Chapelle de l’Agneau de Dieu. Nicole Lignac and Gerard Lignac commissioned it. It depicts Christ Pantocrator after the Shroud of Turin.
Currently there is a study underway. Its purpose is to renovate the Chapelle de l’Agneau de Dieu. The goal is to enhance the exterior. The aim is to make it even more welcoming.
