“La Perle Baroque” they call it. Isn’t that a fitting name for this jewel of Lyon? The Chapelle de la Trinité stands before you a testament to Baroque artistry.

Built between 1617 and 1622 this Roman Catholic chapel is more than just a pretty face. It’s the first Baroque church in Lyon a bold statement of faith and architectural innovation. Étienne Martellange a Jesuit brother designed it. He brought the architectural styles of the Counter-Reformation to Lyon. The chapel sits within the Grand Collège a Jesuit institution since 1567. It served the college students their spiritual sanctuary.

Francis de Sales consecrated the Chapelle de la Trinité in 1622. Its refined décor features Carrara marble. Imagine the artisans carefully placing each piece. The chapel’s beauty is undeniable. It’s a masterpiece. But its history extends beyond its elegant façade.

For a time the Chapelle de la Trinité was far from peaceful. Until September 1799 it served as barracks. Then in 1801 it became the stage for a momentous event. Napoleon Bonaparte himself proclaimed the First Consul President of the Italian Republic right here. This wasn’t just a religious space. It was a hub of historical significance.

Sadly the chapel lost some of its original furnishings over time. Yet its beauty persevered. In the 1990s Lyon’s city authorities undertook a major restoration. Twelve chandeliers now illuminate the chapel. They replicate the style of the 17th century. They add to the chapel’s splendor.

The Chapelle de la Trinité continues to captivate. Today it hosts diverse events. Patrimonial visits fashion shows seminars and charity work all find a home here. Thirty thousand people visit annually. They come to witness its baroque elegance its historical echoes and its enduring charm. This little chapel is a big part of Lyon’s story. A pearl indeed.
