“Can you feel the weight of history pressing down on you?” I ask. We are standing before the Chapelle de la Miséricorde. It is located in Monaco’s old town. This chapel is more than just a beautiful building. It holds centuries of stories within its walls.

The Chapelle de la Miséricorde was built in the mid-17th century. Its baroque style reflects the artistry of that era. The first stone was blessed in 1639 during Prince Honoré II’s reign. He was also the Prior of the Brotherhood of Black Penitents. This brotherhood owns the Chapelle de la Miséricorde.

For four centuries, the chapel played a central role in Monaco’s religious life. Each Good Friday, the traditional procession of Christ-Mort began here. Imagine the scene. Penitents in black robes filled these streets. They carried religious icons. The air was thick with incense and solemn prayers. This tradition was stopped in 1870. It has been revived in recent years.

Inside the Chapelle de la Miséricorde, artistry and devotion intertwine. Look for the wooden Christ sculpted by François-Joseph Bosio. He was a Monegasque artist. Bosio even served as Napoleon I’s official sculptor. Admire the altar made of polychrome marble. Also note the frescoes depicting the Assumption of the Virgin. These were added in 1953. Paintings adorn the chapel walls. One depicts the deliverance of souls from purgatory. Local saints are represented in it.

In 2013, the Chapelle de la Miséricorde was renovated by the town hall for its 350th anniversary. The Chapelle de la Miséricorde offers a place for calm reflection.
